Christmas Ideas that Won’t Break the Bank
Are you short of affordable Christmas ideas? Be it Christmas gift ideas, Christmas party ideas or Christmas card ideas; let’s think outside the usual box to come up with some suggestions that will not break the bank.
We all lead busy lives and, despite the shops now stocking Christmas paraphernalia from the end of the summer holidays, none of us really want to think about ideas for Christmas until December. This often doesn’t leave enough time for us to be as creative as we might otherwise be. Forced into last minute shopping and rushed preparations we end up spending far more than we can afford and spend the greater part of the following year repaying debt. Well, it doesn’t have to be like that.
There is no magic to coming up with affordable Christmas ideas. Let’s start here with the number one concern for most people - Christmas present ideas.
Whether it was because the three Wise Men left such valuable gifts for the baby Jesus or whether it is as a result of modern day commercialism, there seems to be a belief that gifts have to be expensive to be valued. But, is this true? Think about a mother who receives a badly made pottery ornament from her child. The ornament has been made with care at school and wrapped using far too much sticky tape over cheap, thin wrapping paper. Such a gift costs pence but is priceless to the recipient.
You don’t need to buy the latest gadgets and toys for your gifts to be appreciated.
A good tip is not to leave your Christmas shopping until the last minute. Keep your eye open throughout the year for sale bargains that can be purchased at reduced prices and stored safely for Christmas presents.
If you want to entertain at Christmas, remember that your Christmas party ideas do not have to involve great expense. Set up your party as a pot luck event with everyone contributing an item of food and drink. Opening your home to your friends and family is enough; you don’t have to provide all of the provisions too.
Short of Christmas card ideas? Try making your own. If you keep cards from year to year you will have a ready supply of materials from which to make Christmas collages for your very own personalised cards. Some people and organisations have stopped sending Christmas cards, preferring instead to make a charitable contribution to a worthy cause.
Children are full of good ideas and are naturally creative, get them involved in the Christmas preparations so they have a better idea and a keener appreciation of the traditions of this celebration.
Once you start thinking you’ll realise that you have far more Christmas ideas of your own than you might appreciate right now. Get your thinking cap on and put that credit card away.

Christmas Presents - Past and Present
It is thought the tradition of giving Christmas presents can be traced back to the Ancient Romans. The Romans celebrated the festival of Saturnalia at the time we now call Christmas and this was a period of gift giving - even between master and slave.
Of course Christmas time as celebrated today is a Christian festival to mark the birth of Jesus. The story of His birth tells us that three Wise Men, the Magi, brought gifts for the infant Jesus and some think that the giving of presents for Christmas has continued as a reminder of this.
Whatever your thoughts on the history of gift giving you would not be unusual if you found yourself each year struggling for Christmas present ideas. How do you, year after year, come up with unique ideas for Christmas presents that will thrill and delight the recipient?
One idea is to consult the lists of top Christmas presents that appear in all forms of media from September to December each year. There are articles and features to be found on the top presents for kids, the top toys, the most popular games and the bestselling personalised gifts.
Of course, budget has a huge part to play in shopping for Christmas presents. At one time everyone has been seduced into spending more than they can afford on their nearest and dearest but is this really in the true spirit of Christmas? Nowhere in the nativity story does it mention the Magi maxing out their credit cards to bring gifts for the newborn baby Jesus.
Personalised gifts are always popular and these needn’t be expensive hand engraved items. They can be personalised by you with love and care that makes them doubly special. Think about plain, inexpensive items you can buy for your loved ones that can then be personalised at low cost by you.
Handmade Christmas presents can often be produced inexpensively, the main resource they use being time rather than cash. Homemade preserved fruits or chocolates make a welcome and delightful change from the sometimes overpriced and inferior quality commercially produced brands.
The tradition behind the giving of gifts is to express a sentiment not to impress with largesse or outdo the mother in law. For those who still treat this time of year as an excuse for overindulgence and overspending the time has perhaps come to return to traditional values.
Christmas presents do not need to be expensive or opulent they simply need to be thoughtfully chosen or prepared with love to celebrate this special time of year.

Christmas Trees - Everyone’s Favourite Christmas Decoration
Perhaps the most famous tree of all Christmas trees is the one gifted to the United Kingdom by the people of Norway each year. At the time of writing this tradition has been upheld for 62 years having started as a token of appreciation for Britain hosting the Norwegian Government ,who were in exile during the German occupation of their Country at the time of the Second World War. The tree is delivered every year and set up in Trafalgar Square in London.
This famous Christmas tree is hand selected each year from the forests around Oslo, having sometimes been earmarked as a possible candidate for selection some years previously. There is a tree cutting ceremony in Norway in November and a tree lighting ceremony, in London, on the first Thursday in December. The tree is transported between the two Countries by road and ferry.
With an increase in awareness of the effects deforestation can possibly have on Global warming, there has been a move away from real Christmas trees in some households, with many families now electing to set up an artificial Christmas tree instead of the real thing. Some artificial trees are so realistic it is difficult to tell from a distance that they are not real. Others, such as the modern fibre optic Christmas tree, are more apparently man-made.
Of course, every well-dressed Christmas tree needs Christmas tree decorations. Whether your preference for Christmas accessories lies with balls or tinsel you would be hard pressed not to find something that satisfies your needs in the almost mind-blowing selection of options we have offered to us today.
The history of decorating Christmas trees appears to date back to the early sixteenth Century in Europe. It seems likely that the tradition was brought over to the United Kingdom by the Georgian Kings who came from Germany, although Christmas trees did not become popular until the Victorian age when Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were pictured with their children standing around their tree.
Gone are the days when Christmas tree ornaments consisted of home strung garlands of nuts and fruit or perhaps the odd pinecone attached to a ribbon. Nowadays all manner of trinkets and baubles are available in every conceivable colour.
Christmas trees depicted in old illustrations are shown adorned with candles but we now have Christmas tree lights with which we illuminate our trees. Sometimes called fairy lights, these may be simple strings of white lights or kitted out with a selection of multi coloured bulbs. Some lights flash, some are steady. Once again the choice is huge.
Some people choose to use lights to adorn other parts of their house too; threading them through banisters on staircases or positioning them around mirrors or pictures. Christmas lights do create atmosphere and can make even the starkest of surroundings look welcoming.
Real or artificial, Christmas isn’t Christmas without a Christmas tree.

Christmas Cards to Express Seasonal Greetings
In the United Kingdom the sending and exchange of Christmas cards can be traced back to the 1840s when Sir Henry Cole commissioned John Horsley to produce an illustration that was printed on to some two thousand cards. The image used caused some controversy as it did not reference anything related to the birth of Jesus but instead featured a family scene.
Many organisations now use Charity Christmas cards as way of raising funds for their good cause. UNICEF lead the way with this initiative when it started to release its own Christmas cards in 1949. The giving of charity cards for Christmas is popular with business leaders who can be seen to be altruistic at the time of year most associated with giving.
Handmade Christmas cards have become increasingly popular. In Victorian times cards were frequently hand made, very ornate and lavish but times and fashions change and the popularity of commercial cards grew. In recent years handmade cards of all kinds have enjoyed a renaissance with whole businesses now providing nothing but card making materials to the serious craft person.
Christmas card kits are available for those who would like to make their own greetings cards but either lack confidence or the artistic skills required. Such kits contain everything from a card blank to all the trimmings and an envelope in which the finished product may be sent.
Personalised Christmas cards are associated with the rich and famous. They will often feature a photograph of the family (think UK Royal family here) or another image that is relevant and personal to the sender.
The other thing worthy of note with personalised Christmas cards is the fact that these are also pre-printed inside which, whilst it is no doubt a time saver, does rather leave the recipient with the feeling that they were just one of hundreds on an anonymous list.
The sending of Christmas cards has also been used to give the annual update to friends and family with whom the sender is no longer in frequent touch. Love them or hate them, these round robin letters are cropping up with more frequency.
Some Christmas card designs have become collector’s items with collections being based on a design type, such as those featuring Christmas trees, or a particular printing method.
So, this year, as you sit down to write your Christmas cards remember, you are not only sending Christmas greetings, you are also maintaining a tradition and possibly even producing a collector’s item for the future.

The History of Christmas Celebrations
On the 25th December Christmas celebrations take place around the World marking the birthday of Jesus Christ.
The celebration of Christmas is a tradition given to us by the Christian religion although it would be true to say that the date has been hijacked as a holiday festival for all, whatever their faith.
The 25th December has been celebrated as the birthday of Jesus for more than fifteen hundred years. The original date celebrated was January 6th but it appears that the Christian calendar was adjusted to take advantage of the established pagan festivals that the Christians were working to eradicate.
In fact the days of Christmas are a time of celebration in so many traditions. They may not all mark the birth of Jesus but they do have their own reason for declaring a holiday.
This time of year was a period of celebration for the Persians and Romans; it was recognised in Egypt, Germany, Scandinavia, Babylon and throughout the British Isles. Each culture had their own festival or holiday and these have all been subsumed into what we now call Christmas celebrations.
The timing of the Winter Solstice, being so close to Christmas, cannot be ignored. In the Northern Hemisphere this was the time that marked the return of the great Sun God, which was cause for much celebration.
The idea of giving gifts could be argued to stem from the tradition of leaving offerings for those Gods and Goddesses worshipped by pre-Christian cultures. Even in the harsh Roman Empire, which celebrated Saturnalia between the 17th and 24th December, gifts were exchanged between masters and slaves.
Christmas celebrations can be a source of controversy as so many non-Christian festivities are also celebrated at this time. It is a source of distress to many in the Christian Church that this special time of year has been transformed into a time of excess, in stark contrast to the simplicity of the birth of the Christ child.
Whatever your faith, Christmas represents a time of coming together with family and friends, a time of light and love. Whilst the true meaning of Christmas may not be relevant for many it is still a holiday season in many parts of the World where places of work are closed and gifts are given.
Enjoy your Christmas celebrations whatever your faith or your culture. Merry Christmas!

Christmas Decorations - How to Set the Mood for a Very Merry Christmas
There is something special about putting up the Christmas decorations each year. For many families it has become something of a ritual, with an expedition to buy the tree marking the start of the festive season.
Whether your preference is for vintage Christmas decorations, which are brought out year after year, or for more modern baubles and lights that you use once and then hand on to the local charity shop, Christmas isn’t Christmas without the decorations.
Christmas tree decorations range from high - tech lights to homemade strings of fragrant orange slices. Don’t forget that beautifully wrapped gifts placed at the base of the tree add to the ambience. They don’t even have to be real gifts if you can’t trust curious children (and adults) not to peek. Gift-wrap empty boxes and adorn them with beautiful ribbons before placing them around the tree for effect.
Some people like to theme their decorations with perhaps a colour or style running through everything they do. For instance you may decide that you are going to have silver Christmas decorations this year and you will use only items that match this theme.
The beauty of Christmas decorations is that they can be as individual as you are. There are no rights or wrongs. It is your home and your family Christmas and you only have yourselves to please.
Christmas table decorations really do set off the Christmas feast to good effect. If you decide to use candles, ensure they are surrounded by non-flammable items of decoration and never leave the candles lit when unattended. Christmas dinner by candlelight is really rather special. You can make your own table decoration using greenery from the garden or local woodland. Add some coloured ribbons and you are set to go. It doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive.
Outdoor decorations have become increasingly popular with many neighbours striving to outdo each other in the size and extravagance of their displays. Some of these larger outdoor displays are now used to raise money for charity which is a really good idea and fitting with the sentiments of the season.
The Christmas Cards you receive can also be used to decorate your home at low cost. They can be arranged artistically around your rooms to add to the Christmas feel. There are many commercially produced Christmas card holders but you can also make your own with ribbon and thought.
Christmas decorations are an integral part of the Christmas tradition and the effort of putting them up is more than repaid in the pleasure they bring but remember, superstition says they must be taken down by Twelfth Night and packed away for another year.

Christmas Gifts - Make Them Special
Buying Christmas gifts can be challenging. We want to find something special for the people we love but there is often a mismatch between our Christmas gift ideas and our budget.
If funds were unlimited it would be so much easier to buy gifts for Christmas that we knew would be appreciated.
There are so many sources of inspiration for gift ideas for Christmas, it really is simply a case of keeping eyes and ears open for ideas and clues.
To begin with you will find that many of your family members will drop hints. Children make Christmas lists, adults drop broad hints - you just have to be on the ball to pick up on these tips.
Personalised Christmas gifts always give the impression that a lot of thought has gone into their selection. Opening a gift, which has been specially embroidered or engraved with the name of a person, place or thing, certainly invokes a nice warm feeling in the recipient. It indicates that you as the giver have gone to a great deal of trouble in your shopping for Christmas presents.
Look in newspapers, magazines and on the Internet for details of the season’s top Christmas gifts. These are the presents that have been talked up by the media as being the most wanted items.
When buying for children, whatever the age, toys are always a popular choice. They have the added advantage of buying the parents some free time over Christmas too. If you do decide to buy toys as Christmas gifts do be sure to also include any batteries that might be required - there is nothing more disappointing for a child than receiving a toy that can’t be used until the shops open again.
Christmas Gifts do not have to be expensive to be special. Homemade gifts are appreciated for the thoughtfulness and effort that has gone into producing them. If you are going to make your own presents do start early in the year as these things always take longer than you expect.
Don’t be afraid to recycle items for giving at Christmas. Perhaps you have some jewellery that has family significance and a young person who is now old enough to appreciate it and treasure it. Passing on special items in this way is an example of how you can make your Christmas gifts memorable without breaking the bank.
Never underestimate the value placed on heartfelt Christmas greetings. If your budget is very tight this year think about making some very special cards for your nearest and dearest and fill them with words that are special to them.
By applying some lateral thinking and some ingenuity you can overcome the challenges of sourcing Christmas gifts for your loved ones, it is easy if you try.

Christmas Hot Toys - Always a Popular Choice.
Children, no matter what their ages, love Christmas toys. There is something about the excitement of Christmas that makes children want to play games and generally have fun. And, the toys this Christmas are not just for the children - they are for grown up kids too.
So, what are the top Christmas toys this year? What are the products that everyone will be queuing to buy?
Each year the Toy Retailer’s Association announces what it anticipates will be the popular Christmas toys for the year. Some of the top toys anounced for Christmas 2008 are:
- Baby Born with Magic Potty - for the child who wants a realistic baby doll to feed and change. Comes dressed as a girl or a boy
- Bakugan - The Bakugan Starter Pack is billed as a boy’s toy with marbles and action figures
- Ben 10 merchandise - especially the new Ben 10 Deluxe Omnitrix - following the popularity of the television series
- Catcha Beast - a Japanese craze which has made it to the Western World
- Girl Gourmet Cupcake Maker - does what it says on the box
- Elmo Live - aimed at younger children but will be popular with those who buy into nostalgia, as Elmo is to be 40 years old next year
- Biscuit the Dog - a life size Golden Retriever for those who want a dog with an off switch
- High School Musical 3 Dance Mat - a toy that also keeps the kids fit
The most wanted hot Christmas toys can be hard to track down - in fact a humorous film was released on this subject back in 1996. Jingle all the Way with Arnold Schwarzenegger is about a father who discovers the true meaning of Christmas whilst on a frantic search for the Season’s hot toy.
Parents are well advised to do their shopping for gifts early if they don’t want to see disappointed faces on Christmas morning. Whilst it may be funny to watch a fictional demented father trying to track down a much-wanted toy - the reality of finding yourself in that situation is far from amusing.
Buying the hot toys for Christmas is a safe bet if you stick to what is popular, as children are very susceptible to peer pressure. You may not like or agree with their choice but if your child has his or her heart set on the season’s popular choice nothing else will do. Children like to fit in and do what their friends are doing. They are a marketing man’s dream. Once the idea of a toy catches on, no selling is required; the products walk off the shelves by themselves.
Families are often thrown together at Christmas and stress levels can rise which means anything that keeps the children occupied and happy is a good thing. Nobody wants to be surrounded by children who are bored and getting into mischief. The added advantage of buying Christmas toys is that they really do keep the children happy and occupied which means everyone else can enjoy their Christmas too.
